We’d like to offer our most sincere congratulations to the winners of this year’s Mary Helen Washington Writing contest:
Logan R. Smith
Faith Davis, Josie Hill
We also wish to acknowledge Vicki Green, Montana Travis, and Nana Obeng, contestants who made our honorable-mentions list!
The Mary Helen Washington Writing contest is an annual event held in conjunction with our Contemporary American Authors Lecture Series (CAALS). For the first time in the contest’s eight-year history, participants were tasked with penning original, creative expressions through poetry, fiction, and personal essays. The winners of this year’s award truly excelled in connecting us to Pulitzer Prize-winning author Colson Whitehead’s genre-bending tale via the stories of their everyday lives.
We would also like to thank all of the schools and community partners who participated in the contest:
Cass Technical High School, University of Detroit Jesuit High School, Detroit International Academy for Young Women, Detroit Public Library, InsideOut Literary Arts Project, One Earth Writing, Samuel C. Mumford High School, and The Tuxedo Project
